Not long ago, who would have predicted the mental environment humanity would find itself in today? Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how we receive information, demanding more alertness to what is true. Knowing how to discern deepfakes – manipulated images or video – challenges society. And the question, What is authentic truth? has become urgent for everyone to consider.
Recently, I asked a young child what truth is, and he said, “It’s what you say when it isn’t a lie.” Another child unhesitatingly agreed and said everyone really knows what’s true and what’s a lie, even if they don’t always tell the truth.
So how did the kids know that? Is knowing truth inherent in everyone? This week’s Bible lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly on the subject of “Truth” shines fresh light on these and other questions.
In “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” Mary Baker Eddy writes, “The time for thinkers has come. Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. Contentment with the past and the cold conventionality of materialism are crumbling away” (p. vii).
Far above what humans or AI models can create, God, divine Truth, is spiritual, universal, ever-present intelligence. This Truth is knowable and practical, including to meet humanity’s needs for discernment today.
To consider Truth in this context, Christian Science highlights its use as a biblical synonym for God, in the same way Spirit, Life, and Love are used. For example, the psalmist wrote, “Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth” (Psalms 31:5).
God’s truth acts as permanent and dependable law, as knowable as math or aerodynamics. Unlimited by age-old man-made theories, spiritual thinkers from all walks of life have searched for all-encompassing laws or truths.
Searching for a knowable, universal truth led me to Christian Science. Its basic proposition was logical to me – that God is divine intelligence, the wholly good, infinite Spirit that creates man spiritually in His likeness. But I wrestled with the question: So what is this material body? Then, on vacation I found myself in a life-threatening emergency. I had collapsed unexpectedly, losing my sight and the ability to speak or move, and I was in great discomfort.
Frightened and not knowing what to do, my husband began reading to me from the book he was grappling with, Science and Health. What happened next was transformational. I heard clearly in thought, “This is the truth you have been looking for.” In a few moments, all symptoms completely left. I was grateful to be alive, but even more grateful to realize that God, Spirit, was present and speaking directly to consciousness. The threatening material conditions disappeared in that palpable spiritual reality (see Suzanne Riedel, “Easter’s message of regeneration,” Christian Science Sentinel, April 6, 2023).
That experience prompted me to investigate further how mankind knows truth. Urgent needs can impel us to look to God for help. But emergencies aren’t required to learn more of God’s truth. God is the infinite Mind that naturally causes each individual to know right from wrong, truth from untruth, and most importantly, reality from unreality. Universal Truth is dynamic in consciousness, as Jesus described it when he said, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Truth does something!
Mrs. Eddy writes: “Christ is the Truth and Life born of God – born of Spirit and not of matter” (“The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany,” p. 261). As humanity learns more of the spiritual reality that Jesus taught, God’s messages of truth are heard, felt, and understood. God created every individual in His likeness, according to the spiritual record of creation in Genesis 1, and He equipped each individual to become conscious of authentic, spiritual Truth. Nurturing that spiritually inspired awareness brings progress to light. It leads to new views, more intelligent and honest insights, and more practical, inspired solutions for our lives.
Eternal Truth is the present, ultimate reality, operating in every consciousness. Realizing even an inkling of this Truth will lead to freer lives.

La Verdad auténtica

No hace mucho, ¿quién habría predicho el entorno mental en el que se encontraría la humanidad hoy? La inteligencia artificial está cambiando rápidamente la forma en que recibimos la información, exigiendo estar más alerta a lo que es verdadero. Saber distinguir las grandes falsificaciones —imágenes o vídeos manipulados— es un desafío para la sociedad. Y la pregunta, ¿Qué es la verdad auténtica? se ha transformado en una urgencia que todos debemos considerar.
Recientemente, le pregunté a un niño pequeño qué es la verdad, y me dijo: “Es lo que dices cuando no es una mentira”. Otro niño estuvo de acuerdo sin dudar y dijo que todo el mundo sabe realmente lo que es verdadero y lo que es mentira, aunque no siempre digan la verdad.
¿Cómo lo sabían los niños? ¿Es inherente a todos conocer la verdad? La Lección Bíblica de esta semana del Cuaderno Trimestral de la Ciencia Cristiana sobre el tema de la “Verdad” arroja nueva luz sobre estas y otras preguntas.
“En Ciencia y Salud con la Llave de las Escrituras,” Mary Baker Eddy escribe: “La hora de los pensadores ha llegado. La Verdad, independiente de doctrinas y sistemas honrados a través del tiempo, llama al portal de la humanidad. La conformidad con el pasado y el frío convencionalismo del materialismo se están desmoronando” (pág. vii).
Por encima de lo que los humanos o los modelos de IA puedan crear, Dios, la Verdad divina, es la inteligencia espiritual, universal y siempre presente. Esta Verdad es conocible y práctica, incluso para satisfacer las necesidades de discernimiento de la humanidad hoy en día.
Para considerar la Verdad en este contexto, la Ciencia Cristiana destaca su uso como sinónimo bíblico de Dios, de la misma manera que se usan Espíritu, Vida y Amor. Por ejemplo, el salmista escribió: “Tú me has redimido, oh Jehová, Dios de verdad” (Salmos 31:5).
La verdad de Dios actúa como una ley permanente y confiable, tan conocible como las matemáticas o la aerodinámica. Ilimitados por las teorías ancestrales creadas por el hombre, pensadores espirituales de todos los ámbitos de la vida han buscado leyes o verdades que lo abarquen todo.
La búsqueda de una verdad universal y conocible me llevó a la Ciencia Cristiana. Su proposición básica me resultó lógica: que Dios es la inteligencia divina, el Espíritu completamente bueno e infinito que crea al hombre espiritualmente a Su semejanza. No obstante, me planteé la pregunta: Entonces, ¿qué es este cuerpo material? Luego, cuando estaba de vacaciones, me encontré en una emergencia que puso en peligro mi vida. Me desplomé inesperadamente, y perdí la vista y la capacidad de hablar o moverme, y tenía un malestar muy grande.
Asustada y sin saber qué hacer, mi marido empezó a leerme del libro con el que él estaba luchando, Ciencia y Salud. Lo que ocurrió después fue transformador. Escuché claramente en el pensamiento: “Esta es la verdad que estabas buscando”. En unos momentos, todos los síntomas desaparecieron por completo. Estaba agradecida de estar viva, pero aún más agradecida de darme cuenta de que Dios, el Espíritu, estaba presente y hablando directamente a la conciencia. Las amenazantes condiciones materiales desaparecieron en esa realidad espiritual palpable (véase Suzanne Riedel, “Easter’s message of regeneration,” Christian Science Sentinel, April 6, 2023).
Esa experiencia me llevó a investigar más a fondo cómo la humanidad conoce la verdad. Las necesidades urgentes pueden impulsarnos a buscar ayuda en Dios. Pero no se requieren emergencias para conocer más sobre la verdad de Dios. Dios es la Mente infinita que naturalmente hace que cada persona distinga el bien del mal, la verdad de la falsedad y, lo más importante, la realidad de la irrealidad. La Verdad Universal es una acción dinámica en la consciencia, como la describió Jesús cuando dijo: “Conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres” (Juan 8:32). ¡La verdad hace algo!
La Sra. Eddy escribe: “El Cristo es la Verdad y la Vida nacidas de Dios, nacidas del Espíritu y no de la materia” (“La Primera Iglesia de Cristo, Científico, y Miscelánea,” pág. 261). A medida que la humanidad aprende más sobre la realidad espiritual que Jesús enseñó, los mensajes de verdad de Dios se escuchan, sienten y comprenden. Dios creó a cada individuo a Su semejanza, según el registro espiritual de la creación en Génesis 1, y preparó a cada persona para que se volviera consciente de la Verdad auténtica y espiritual. Cultivar esa conciencia inspirada espiritualmente saca a la luz el progreso, conduce a nuevas perspectivas, a vislumbres más inteligentes y honestas y a soluciones más prácticas e inspiradas para nuestras vidas.
La Verdad eterna es el presente, la realidad absoluta, que opera en toda conciencia. Percibir incluso un atisbo de esta Verdad llevará a vidas más libres.
