Through some deductive reasoning and spiritual intuition, it’s possible to get a handle on how God actually perceives each of us. In the Old Testament of the Bible, a writer makes these requests of God: “Renew a right spirit within me. … Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit” (Psalms 51:10, 12).
Asking God to renew a “right spirit” might be seen as asking Him for some clear information and fresh inspiration about the makeup of one’s true identity. “Thy free spirit” certainly hints at God’s nature. Besides being identified in the Bible as Love, God often is referred to as Spirit. Spirit is distinctly nonmaterial. Instead of including atoms and molecules, God is entirely free of matter and mortality, which conveys some enlightening and encouraging information about who we really are.
That’s where the deducing comes in. By learning what comprises God, we can learn what comprises men and women in God’s image and likeness. Christian Science is so helpful with this journey of discovery. It teaches that, instead of material processes, it is God, divine Spirit, who fashions us. Since God is 100% Spirit, it would make sense that God’s offspring would be 100% spiritual and have no association with matter.
That, no doubt, is an attention-grabbing point of view! For so long, many have believed that God is Spirit, yet, somehow, expelled us out of His presence into the vulnerability and misery of matter. That really doesn’t make sense, though. God is Love. It sure wouldn’t be a loving act for God to place us within a world of lack, pain, fear, and death.
No, God’s work is fully done and is solely good. Spirit sees us as completely spiritual, forever loved by God and completely loving in our expression of God. We don’t someday evolve into being spiritual; Spirit has already created us as its divine idea. Monitor founder Mary Baker Eddy wrote a book that explains Christian Science, and it is called, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.” She explains that “God creates all forms of reality. His thoughts are spiritual realities” (p. 513).
If, right in this moment, we each truly are the entirely spiritual idea of God, good, no diseases can affect us, no accidents can affect us. And it is possible to prove this tangibly. One of the first times that I remember doing so was when, as a child, I was standing right beneath someone who was pouring very hot water out of a tea kettle into a cup. The water spilled and went down my neck and onto my chest.
My father saw what happened. He had recently begun studying Christian Science through reading the Bible and “Science and Health,” and had learned some helpful concepts about God, about how God, Mind, creates us as His spiritual ideas, and about how prayer works.
In the moment that the burning water touched me, I felt anything but spiritual. As my father comforted me and tenderly wiped off the water, I saw him pray by turning his attention to God, asking for help. It is in becoming open to God’s help that spiritual intuition comes into play.
God always is present and always loving each of us. This love is so much more than any human’s affection. The very loving help and information that Spirit provides is called the Christ. Jesus depended so wholeheartedly and consistently on the Christ that he carries the title of Christ.
Spirit’s love for every single one of us became evident in my dad’s thoughts, and he immediately told me about it. I could tell how wonderful this was making him feel. Within those few moments after being burned, I opened myself up to God’s love for me, and felt such love for God.
God’s love ensures that we stay spiritual. Water, even very hot water, never burns spiritual ideas. God’s ideas remain permanently perfect.
To yield yourself to the Christly truth that Spirit is providing, I found, is effective prayer. The pain and evidence of a burn stopped within a moment. You can imagine how that affected me! I’ll never forget it. I became very curious about how God actually sees everyone. I’ve remained just as curious through the years, so I continue to pray, deducing the facts of real existence through Christly, spiritual intuition.
Held here in God’s presence, we each are seen as whole, supplied, loved, purely good, and entirely spiritual. Healing is, in fact, a revealing of what Spirit already has done for its creation. With heartfelt love for God, it’s worth it to align our thoughts, views, outlook, and feelings to the reality of Spirit and its offspring.
